In a deal to get his life back from an unnamed government agency that disavowed him, Lucas Reyes, a former secret service agent boards a commercial flight from Thailand to San Francisco where he must identify and apprehend a mercenary known as the Ghost, and keep them both alive aboard a plane full of killers.
Fight or Flight uses a familiar trope which follows the plight of a marked man who is coerced into undertaking a deadly mission where the odds are stacked against him, while not knowing who he can trust to help him stay alive. While quite predictable in its delivery, Fight or Flight provides equal parts over the top action, and absurd humor which makes this a somewhat entertaining although brainless journey that flies just shy of two hours.
Delivered by the same group that gave fans the John Wick franchise, the similarities between that franchise and this movie are quite noticeable, more specifically in the physicality of the movie with the fight choreography, and Reyes ability to dish out and receive immense bodily damage while remaining on his feet not unlike John Wick.
Another similarity whether intentional or not reaches back to the film The Last Boy Scout. Anyone familiar with that film which stars Bruce Willis as Joe Hallenbeck will notice that Hallenbeck and Reyes share a very similar incident which leads to their untimely demise from the Secret Service. In this viewers opinion, it’s just too coincidental to not be intentional.
As for the acting, Josh Hartnett who plays Lucas Reyes, his performance as the likeable yet unhinged former secret service agent is an entertaining watch. The way in which Hartnett adapts to the variety of situations Reyes finds himself in, specifically related to the use of toad venom, shows a comedic side of Hartnett that this viewer had not seen from the actor previous to this movie. As for the rest of the cast, there really isn’t anything in particular that stands out. Even the movies intended protagonist blends into the background among the supporting cast. As for the overall plot and story, watch the trailer, it just about reveals everything in under three minutes. Of course, this shouldn’t surprise anyone who has an interest in seeing this movie. With that in mind, Fight or Flight is a fun ride worth checking out once it hits the streaming circuit.
